The Celebration of the Dead

Day-of-the-Dead

Many of you know that Halloween is coming up very soon, it got me thinking about the traditions of this international holiday. One of the main things about Halloween is dressing up and a lot of us dress up as the dead. Halloween is the only time of the year for it to be acceptable to dress up as the dead and to celebrate it. However, in South Mexico and other Catholic countries, Halloween is more commonly known as the Day of the Dead. Yes, you guessed it, it is a day in which the dead are celebrated. The Day of the Dead is a day full of festivals, food and families reuniting.

All around the world, almost everyone celebrates Halloween whether it differentiate from one nation to another. Everyone has their different ways of spending Halloween other it be partying or having a horror film marathon, we all do something different. Something got me thinking is that, we all love to celebrate the dead one specific day but any other day, people are afraid of death. If you were to ask a few people, what one of their greatest fears in their life is, most of them would say that death is what they are most afraid of. Now, if you had asked me that question this time last year, I would have probably said the same thing but now I have realised that death is something that you should not fear. Granted, you are taken away from your family and friends but all good things must come to an end. Death is inevitable and a natural part of the life cycle. Everything and everyone will die, that’s just life.

There is nothing you can do to stop it but you can use your one chance of life and use it well. You can use this chance to fulfil everything you’ve ever wanted to in life. You can control your life and time’ll just run away with you too. If you have been staring at your computer or phone screen for the past few hours, turn it off now and get out there. You only have a limited amount of time, don’t waste it by looking at a screen all your life. Explore a little, do something new, broaden your horizons, you never know what you’ll find! That said, this would be a good time to finish and for the both of us to head out into the world.

My Trip to the Big Apple!

First off, Happy New Year to everyone and all my readers, I hope you all had a good Christmas too!

If you have ever considered going to New York, I would definitely do it because it is one of the best places to visit in the world in my opinion and I think yours if you went too! There are so many things to do there, you would have to stay for more than a week to do as much as you could.

Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 17.01.08

On the first day, my family and I looked around Times Square and the shops on the streets nearby. We started the day off early because of jet lag, when you travel back in time, you’ll find that you will go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier which in some cases in good because you can start to explore earlier and have more room to roam as the city is usually less packed early in  the morning especially when it is winter.Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 17.01.24Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 17.30.13Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 17.02.57

These are just a few pictures that I took in Times Square, it’s nice to go into the park when it’s sunny even if it’s cold you can still enjoy the views that the park has to offer you. I can imagine that in the summer, it looks amazing, with all the green leaves on the trees, to sunbathe on the fields and to embrace the city’s rays.

Some of you may recognise this hotel if not, this is the Plaza Hotel. If you have ever seen Home Alone 2, then I’d definitely recommend coming here as this hotel was featured in the film. You can also look around inside, in case you were wondering, it does now look different compared to when the film was released but nevertheless, it looks stunning inside!

The picture on the left was the view of when we were standing in the queue, don’t worry if you do wait a long time, you’ll have a  lovely view to enjoy and musicians usually play along the side of the queue. You’ve got plenty to keep yourself entertained while waiting in line. I would go in the afternoon because on the trip back, you get to watch the sunset with the Statue of Liberty. It is   one of the most spectacular things you’ll ever experience!

When walking around in New York, it can be very tiring, I would advise that you wear comfortable walking shoes because they will ache at the end of the day. Fifth Avenue is full of a lot of shops and sights to see like Empire State Building, the Flatiron Building and Central Park.

These photos were taken on the top of the Rockefeller Centre/Center, you are taken up seventy floors in a lift, when you’re in the lift, if you look above you are able to see yourself quickly ascend to the top. Once you get to the top, you are greeted with breathtaking sights. There are thick glass windows that block you off from falling but there are gaps, just the right size to fit your camera lens, so that there isn’t an annoying reflection in your picture. You can then go up two floors to the top of the building and take as many pictures as you want, panoramic pictures are best to take from the highest point of the building. On one side you can see the Empire State Building and in the far distance the Statue of Liberty. Opposite is Central Park, on the top deck you finally come to realisation as to how big the park is. I did find it odd that there was a huge park in the middle of a busy city, regardless of the fact, it’s still a great place!

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant is a real place and it is situated in the middle of Times Square as is the Hard Rock Cafe, McDonalds and many other places to eat. You can purchase some clothing items in the Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant and Hard Rock Cafe, beware you are going to one of the most famous cities in the world so don’t be surprised when your bill is a large amount. You are visiting an incredible city, going there could be a once in a lifetime opportunity so do enjoy it and go wild because you may only visit the city once!

As you all probably know, New York is the city that never sleeps and it’s true. If you stayed there all night, you could stay awake without any trouble. It’s weird to see the sky pitch black but yet you’re surrounded by exhilarating lights at night! New Years Eve  is unbelievable! The moment the ball drops, confetti is released, everybody is full of delight as we all turn over a new leaf and begin fresh by starting it off in one of the best cities in the world. Overall, my experience was great there and to anyone that could go there, should go!

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the pictures and reading about my experiences. Hopefully, you all should experience something like this in your life. It’s those moments in your life, that you have to cherish whether you travel alone or with loved ones.

The True Meaning Of Christmas?

merry-christmas-snoopy-9066336-800-600

I thought that this was the right time to write about something like this. Before, I begin whatever I may say that what I think the true meaning of Christmas means doesn’t mean that I’m right everyone will have a different opinion to me maybe because of religion or just even personal thoughts. Despite what I think Christmas means, I do not mean to imply that my interpretation is correct. Everyone has their own opinion and is entitled to one.

Occasionally, around this time of year, you often hear people usually older generations saying that we do not know the true meaning of Christmas but we all have different ideas of what Christmas should be like. Technology is often used an excuse, I can guarantee that at least one person in each household would receive a gadget. Most children care more about the presents rather than anything else but as we grow up we realise what it was like to be a child during Christmas. It was amazing, the excitement of Santa, his reindeer etc. As you grow up, reality kicks in and you start to lose interest. This might not be necessarily true for everyone but for some it may. During Christmas, children grow up thinking about the presents, what they’ll get, whose present is better than whose. We can’t always blame the children though, society and media is evolving quickly. Material items are being portrayed to be more important rather than family, friends, memories etc. As a result of this, children do start to forget the true meaning of Christmas.

It is a different story if you are religious, for Christians I know that the birth of Jesus is why we celebrate this holiday but for other religions e.g. Judaism I am not 100% sure of the meaning of Hanukkah (apologies if I have misspelled). When I was younger, I remember being taught that presents weren’t why Christmas was important but that Jesus, our loved ones etc were the reason. I guess as you grow up you start to realise the true meaning of all of this. No matter what you believe in, we all have an idea of what Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid etc should be like.

As I have matured, I think Christmas means when you come to realise all the things you have and to be grateful and appreciate what you have rather than what you don’t. To cherish all your family and friends as others may not be able to do so.

I hope you enjoyed this blog, thank you to all my readers and I hope you have a great time celebrating whatever festivity you celebrate and have a happy new year!

Before I go, I am going on holiday from tomorrow, I may not be able to post until the week of January the 5th. If I’m not able to write, I will write a huge blog about my holiday!

Christmas Q&A!

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 18.55.06

So I’ve been feeling Christmasy lately and thought that this would be a good time to do something like this, I added a little twist to the normal Q&A!

Do you countdown to Christmas?

Of course, I have an app on my phone and from today there are twenty eight days till Christmas. Christmas is getting closer than you think, it’s December in less than a week! I’m not 100% sure whether other countries around the world do this but in England we have advent calendars, which is a box with 24 little doors containing a chocolate treat behind each door.

When do you put up your Christmas tree and/or decorations?

My family and I usually put up our tree on the 1st of December and the other decorations. We have cute Christmas candles with robin and deer on them. I think one of the best things about Christmas are the  scented candles like apple wreath, snowflake cookies and more.

What goes on top of your tree?

I know traditionally it should be a star but instead we have an angel with a white dress and halo.

What do you eat for your Christmas meal and when do you eat it?

My family and I have a roast dinner which consists of roast chicken, roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy. Obviously, we don’t forget about the crackers, with the christmas hats and prize. We eat it at about lunch time after we have opened all our presents.

Do you have any meal time traditions?

Mentioned previously yes, we have crackers. My sisters and I would normally listen to Christmas songs together and just enjoy the meal.

Do you leave anything out for Santa?

Yes, we leave out milk, chocolate chip cookies and maybe Celebrations, Roses or Quality Streets (British readers will understand).

When do you open your gifts?

On the 25th of December, at about 7am. My sisters and I usually have to negotiate a time with our parents because otherwise we would wake up too early!

What’s on top of your Christmas list?

This year, a new phone is on the top preferably the iPhone 6, what’s on yours?

Favourite Christmas songs?

A lot of the old classics like I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, Merry Christmas Everyone, Let It Snow x3, Baby It’s Cold Outside (especially the Elf version), Shake Up Christmas and many others.

Favourite songs?

Well, there are many such as Elf, Home Alone One and Two, Fred Claus, The Polar Express, Jingle All The Way, Arthur Christmas, Nativity, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Santa Clause and loads more.

I hope that this got you in the Christmas mood, remember 28 days left and counting!
